Students from all batches and disciplines of the Department of Design visited the Annual Exhibition at the College of Art, New Delhi — one of India’s premier fine arts institutions — where the exhibition showcased graduating and senior students’ work across painting, sculpture, applied arts, and design. The visit provided IILM Design students with exposure to a wide spectrum of artistic and design practice in an academic exhibition setting, enriching their understanding of fine art traditions, artistic experimentation, and the presentation of academic work in a professional exhibition context. Discussions at the exhibition explored the relationship between fine art and applied design, the conceptual underpinnings of exhibited works, and how artistic sensibility informs design thinking — highlighting that the boundary between fine art and applied design is not fixed but a site of productive creative exchange. Students reflected on presentation and curation as design skills in their own right, recognising that how work is framed and displayed is as significant a communicative act as the work itself. Cross-disciplinary exposure to painting, sculpture, applied arts, and design within a single academic exhibition setting inspired students to expand their own creative approaches and consider how diverse artistic traditions can inform their practice across design disciplines.
Students gained exposure to the breadth of creative practice at India’s foremost fine arts institution — the College of Art, New Delhi — encountering work across painting, sculpture, applied arts, and design in a single professional academic exhibition context. Students engaged enthusiastically with the exhibited works, discussing techniques, conceptual frameworks, and presentation strategies with peers and faculty, which encouraged reflection on their own creative practice and aspirations. The visit enriched students’ understanding of fine art traditions, artistic experimentation, and the professional standards of presenting academic work in an exhibition setting — directly applicable to their own final-year and portfolio presentations. Cross-disciplinary exposure inspired students to expand their own creative approaches, with discussions on how artistic sensibility informs design thinking broadening their conceptual vocabulary across all design disciplines. Students recognised presentation and curation as design skills in their own right — an insight with direct professional relevance for careers in exhibition design, visual communication, interior design, and allied fields.
