What Happened

The Department of Media and Journalism organised “Cutting Stories: The Art of Film Editing & Storytelling,” a workshop held on 15 October 2026 (Thursday) from 10:15 AM at the Mac Lab, Design Building. The faculty convener was Ms. Aymun Kaleem, and the guest speaker was Mayank Singhal, Educator. The session began with an introduction to video editing and a talk on filmmaking and narrative design. Students then read a short film script and edited it using a common set of raw clips. They worked through:

  • Project setup and importing media
  • Basic timeline editing: arranging, trimming, splitting, moving and deleting clips
  • Audio editing: music, volume and voice-over
  • Exporting and sharing

The day ended with a mini project in which students created and presented a short video of their own.

Top Insights

  • Starting from the same script and raw clips, students saw first-hand how choices on the timeline reshape a story.
  • The session was hands-on from start to finish.
  • The focus stayed on cutting, sequencing and rhythm, the building blocks of storytelling, rather than on titles, captions and transitions.

Speaker quotes

“Every cut is a decision about the story: what to show, what to hold back, and when to let a moment breathe.”

Student Takeaways

  • Students gained a deeper understanding of editing as a storytelling tool, where cuts, rhythm and selection shape meaning.
  • They gained practical command of the basic editing workflow, from importing media to exporting.
  • They turned a script and raw clips into a short edited film of their own.
