What Happened

The School of Law, IILM University, Gurugram, organised a session on “Making Legal Education Skill-Oriented and Practice-Focused” on 21 September 2026 at the Board Room, 3rd floor. The resource person was Mr. Lalit Bhasin, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India, and President, Society of Indian Law Firms. The 1.5-hour interactive discussion for 25 faculty members covered how to introduce Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) to students and why early understanding matters for practice-readiness. It also covered practical strategies for bringing ADR into classroom teaching. Mr. Bhasin suggested setting up a Mediation Centre at the university so students can get hands-on exposure to ADR.

Top Insights

  • Arbitration and mediation are still seen as secondary options in India. The session argued for treating them as mainstream, preferred routes to justice, supported by a stronger institutional arbitration culture.
  • Early ADR exposure in legal education can ease the burden of pending cases by offering faster, cost-effective and less adversarial resolution.
  • A university Mediation Centre could give law students hands-on practice beyond doctrinal learning.

Student Takeaways

  • Students will benefit indirectly: faculty are now equipped to introduce ADR in the classroom and treat it as a core skill.
  • A proposed Mediation Centre could give students practical experience in mediation and arbitration.
  • The session pushes students to see arbitration and mediation as credible careers and paths to justice, not an afterthought.
