What Happened

The School of Law, in collaboration with the Centre for Criminal Investigation & Forensic Science (CCIFS), organised a one-day workshop, “Forensic Science Practices – From Evidence to Truth,” on 22 September 2026 (10:00 AM–4:00 PM) at the Moot Court Hall. Coordinated by Dr. Nidhi Saroj, it brought together students of Law, Engineering and Psychology, with Mr. Darshan Murali (CCIFS) as resource person. Sessions covered:

  • Crime scene management, including the chain of custody
  • Physical and trace evidence
  • Cyber and digital forensics, including forensic imaging and data recovery
  • Questioned documents and fingerprint examination
  • The role of forensic experts

A live mock crime-scene demonstration in the hall showed cordoning, evidence marking and documentation.

Top Insights

  • The workshop was interdisciplinary, reflecting how modern forensic investigation draws on law, technology and psychology.
  • The live mock crime scene let students see evidence handling first-hand, and many named it the most valuable part of the day.
  • It linked scientific evidence directly to legal proceedings, including how forged or manipulated documents become evidence in court.

Student Takeaways

  • Students understood why crime-scene preservation and an unbroken chain of custody are central to admissible evidence.
  • They learned how physical, trace and digital evidence is identified, collected and preserved, and that handwriting and fingerprint comparison is systematic science, not visual guesswork.
  • For law students, the main takeaway was the connection between forensic evidence and criminal law, which reinforced classroom learning.
