What Happened

The Debating Club, School of Law, organised the 4th Student Panel Discussion, “Beyond the Threshold – When Does Violence Become Visible?”, on 30 September 2026 at 3:00 PM at the Moot Court Hall. About 30 students and faculty attended. Six student panelists took part: Anshika Singh, Gargi Siwach, Tushika Verma, Himani Yadav, Uday Sheoran and Kashya Kant. The discussion used the films Thappad (2020) and Provoked (2006) as starting points to examine domestic violence, covering emotional and psychological abuse, coercion, dignity, autonomy and gender. It also looked at how law responds, and what barriers people face in seeking legal protection.

Top Insights

  • The session argued that violence is not always physical, and that seemingly isolated incidents can form a pattern of abuse and control.
  • Cinema gave students an entry point to connect legal concepts with social realities.
  • The discussion stressed a gender-conscious, victim-sensitive approach, and looked at the social, psychological and structural barriers to reporting violence and seeking remedies.

Student Takeaways

  • Students learned to look beyond visible, physical violence and question assumptions about relationships and gender roles.
  • They saw that legal remedies are only part of the picture, and that social and psychological barriers shape whether abuse is recognised and reported.
  • The panel format let students engage critically and with empathy on a sensitive issue, while grounding it in legal awareness.
