The hands-on interactive workshop on “Smart Scientific Writing: Learning LaTeX with AI Assistance” was designed to introduce participants to LaTeX-based scientific documentation alongside AI-assisted writing tools for enhanced academic productivity, strongly supporting the vision of NEP 2020 which promotes research-oriented learning, innovation, and skill-based education. Students were introduced to basic LaTeX syntax, document structure, equations, matrices, and formatting techniques through live demonstrations on scientific equation writing and report formatting using Overleaf and LaTeX platforms — developing the foundational technical writing skills essential for research papers, assignments, technical reports, mathematical expressions, and project documentation. The integration of AI-assisted writing support tools alongside traditional LaTeX training positioned the workshop at the intersection of established scientific communication standards and emerging AI productivity tools, equipping participants with a modern, hybrid approach to technical documentation. The workshop’s open-to-all-schools format attracted more than 60 students from various departments, demonstrating that LaTeX literacy and scientific writing skills are broadly relevant across disciplines — not confined to Computer Science — and reflecting a cross-institutional demand for research-oriented technical communication training. The session remained highly interactive with active student participation and queries throughout, and received highly positive feedback — validating the LaTeX and AI writing workshop format as an effective, practically valued addition to IILM University’s skill-based programming, with clear preparedness outcomes for dissertations, research publications, and project reports.
Students gained enhanced understanding of formal scientific writing and documentation standards through hands-on practical exposure to LaTeX-based report preparation — developing a professional technical writing competency essential for research papers, dissertations, and technical project documentation across all disciplines. Participants developed improved practical exposure to LaTeX-based report preparation through real-time hands-on work covering basic LaTeX syntax, document structure, equations, matrices, and formatting — translating from conceptual introduction to practical capability within a single session. Students gained increased awareness regarding AI-assisted academic writing tools and how they can enhance efficiency in technical documentation, developing a modern, hybrid approach to scientific writing that combines traditional LaTeX standards with AI productivity enhancement. More than 60 students from various schools and departments developed better preparedness for future research projects, dissertations, and publications — with the broadly cross-disciplinary participation validating the universal relevance of scientific writing skills across IILM University’s academic community. The workshop strengthened the research and technical writing culture among students, with highly positive feedback reflecting genuine student appreciation for the practical applicability of LaTeX and AI writing tool proficiency to their immediate academic needs and longer-term research aspirations.
