The session was designed to provide B.Tech 1st and 2nd year students with early industry exposure, helping them understand the expectations of modern recruitment processes — with Mr. Chandan Jha, AVP at GeeksforGeeks, emphasising that a resume serves as a professional representation of an individual’s skills, clarity of thinking, and career direction rather than merely a formal document. Students were guided on how to structure resumes effectively by including technical skills, academic projects, internship experiences, certifications, and achievements with measurable impact — establishing a comprehensive, recruiter-oriented framework for professional documentation at an early stage of their academic journey. Common mistakes in resume writing were highlighted, including excessive content, poor formatting, and lack of relevance to job roles, whilst strategies for customising resumes according to specific job descriptions were introduced to improve shortlisting chances in competitive recruitment processes. Practical guidance was provided on LinkedIn profile optimisation — including maintaining a professional profile, highlighting skills and achievements, and building a strong professional network — positioning LinkedIn as a career development platform of equal importance to the resume itself. In today’s competitive professional environment, having a well-structured resume and a strong LinkedIn presence plays a crucial role in securing internships and employment opportunities, making early development of these competencies a strategic professional investment for technology students.
Students gained a clearer understanding of how recruiters evaluate resumes during the shortlisting stage, and learned how to structure and present their academic and technical experiences — including technical skills, academic projects, internships, certifications, and measurable achievements — in a professional manner. Students recognised the importance of LinkedIn as a platform for networking and career development, shifting their perception of the platform from a social network to a professional career asset that must be actively curated. The session received positive feedback, with students appreciating the speaker’s clear explanations and real-world insights; the interactive nature encouraged questions and gave participants clarity on building strong professional profiles and avoiding common mistakes. Students developed understanding of how to customise resumes according to specific job descriptions, developing the strategic awareness that generic resumes are less effective than targeted, role-specific professional documents. With 250 participants from the 1st and 2nd year cohorts, the session provided early and broad-based industry exposure that will benefit students throughout their academic and professional journey at IILM University.
