The Breast Health Awareness Workshop, organised by SCSE in association with the BreastWise Foundation and conducted by Dr. Suchana — a breast surgery specialist trained at AIIMS Delhi and Safdarjung Hospital — was the first-of-its-kind women-exclusive workshop organised at IILM University, creating a safe and focused environment for meaningful discussions on breast health, early detection, and preventive care. The initiative aligns with the vision of National Education Policy 2020, which emphasises holistic education, health awareness, and overall well-being of students, positioning healthcare literacy as an integral component of comprehensive university education alongside academic and professional skill development. Participants were introduced to concepts of self-examination and recognising early signs of breast cancer, equipping approximately 70 female students across different schools of IILM with life-relevant preventive healthcare knowledge directly applicable beyond the university setting. The workshop’s interactive design — incorporating quizzes and goodie bag distribution alongside the clinical content — demonstrated that women’s health awareness sessions are most effective when they create a comfortable, engaging, and non-clinical atmosphere that encourages open discussion and active participation. The first women-exclusive initiative of its kind at IILM increased confidence in discussing women’s health issues openly, reinforced the importance of preventive healthcare and early detection, and supported the holistic development goals envisioned in NEP 2020 — establishing a precedent for future women-centric awareness programming at the institution.
Approximately 70 female students across different schools of IILM gained enhanced awareness and understanding of breast health, increased confidence in discussing women’s health issues openly, and reinforced understanding of the importance of preventive healthcare and early detection — providing life-relevant knowledge directly applicable beyond the university context. Students were introduced to self-examination techniques and the ability to recognise early signs, equipping them with practical, potentially life-saving preventive healthcare skills that extend well beyond academic learning. The workshop’s interactive elements — including quizzes and goodie bags — created an engaging and comfortable environment that encouraged open participation, with feedback highlighting the strongly positive reception and student interest in having more such workshops in the future. The workshop supported holistic development goals as envisioned in NEP 2020, broadening students’ experience of university education to encompass health and well-being as dimensions of comprehensive professional and personal formation. As the first women-exclusive initiative of its kind at IILM, the workshop established an important precedent for gender-sensitive health awareness programming, and many students expressed appreciation for the institutional recognition that women’s health deserves a dedicated, safe, and focused educational space.
