Labour-cum-Industrial Court and District & Sessions Court, Gurugram
IILM Law School organised an educational visit to the Labour-cum-Industrial Court and the District & Sessions Court, Gurugram, as part of experiential legal learning designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical exposure to the functioning of courts. At the Labour-cum-Industrial Court, students observed live proceedings related to industrial disputes, service matters, and employer-employee conflicts, gaining insights into the roles of Presiding Officers, trade unions, employers, and legal representatives in labour adjudication.
At the District & Sessions Court, students observed proceedings related to civil and criminal matters and were introduced to the hierarchical structure of the district judiciary and the roles played by judges, public prosecutors, defence counsel, and court staff. The visit enabled students to correlate classroom teaching with real-world judicial processes, develop an appreciation for judicial functioning and legal ethics, gain exposure to alternative dispute resolution and adjudication in labour matters, and build confidence and interest in litigation and judicial careers. Such experiential learning initiatives contribute significantly to holistic legal education.
Students actively engaged by asking questions and interacting with legal practitioners throughout the visit, which enriched their understanding of courtroom practices and real-life legal challenges. They gained first-hand exposure to court procedures, courtroom decorum, and the practical application of labour laws and criminal laws in judicial proceedings. The visit helped students understand procedural aspects of litigation including filing, hearings, and arguments, and provided practical insight into the implementation of labour legislations and dispute resolution mechanisms. Students developed an enhanced understanding of courtroom etiquette, advocacy skills, and judicial processes. The highly enriching and informative experience successfully met its objectives by providing meaningful practical exposure and deepening students’ understanding of court procedures and labour law adjudication.
