Vice-Chancellor
Dr. Jayasankar Variyar is an accomplished academic leader, researcher, and industry professional with over three decades of experience spanning higher education, research, and global industry. He is the Vice Chancellor Designate at IILM University and has previously served as Pro Vice Chancellor at UPES and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academics) at GITAM University.
A Chemical Engineering graduate from Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Dr. Variyar earned his PhD from Duke University and pursued postdoctoral research at University of California, Los Angeles. He began his academic journey as faculty at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur before moving into industry, where he held leadership positions at ICI, Unilever, and Cholayil Pvt. Ltd.
Over the years, he has led initiatives in product innovation, analytical sciences, manufacturing excellence, educational technology, accreditation, and institutional transformation. At UPES and GITAM, he played a key role in strengthening academic systems, industry-academia collaborations, and quality initiatives that contributed to the university’s growth and academic excellence.
Dr. Variyar is widely recognised for integrating industry perspectives into higher education and for driving technology-enabled learning ecosystems, digital academic processes, and AI-enabled educational innovation. His research interests include molecular dynamics simulations, engineering education, institutional development, and educational transformation aligned with NEP 2020.
Known for his interdisciplinary outlook and collaborative leadership style, Dr. Variyar continues to mentor faculty, researchers, and student innovators while championing excellence, innovation, and societal impact in higher education.
