Students walking together
Centre for Purpose

'Where self-awareness meets social impact'

Dedicated to creating meaningful interventions with students, teachers and the community at large, the Centre shapes purpose-driven leaders through mindful reflective practices, developing a growth mindset by adopting the Design Thinking approach and encouraging responsible and ethical behaviour by practicing empathy in social immersions.

The Centre creates a transformative teaching-learning environment where students explore their identity, values and aspirations while engaging with real social and business challenges.

Through experiential learning, building safe reflective spaces, and meaningful community engagement, the Centre enables students to align personal growth, social responsibility and professional aspirations.

In doing so, it prepares students not only to build successful careers, but to contribute thoughtfully to society and to the world around them.

"Purpose is a stable and generalized intention to accomplish something that is at once meaningful to the self and of consequence to the world beyond the self."

— William Damon, Stanford University

Our Vision

To inspire learners to discover their purpose and become compassionate leaders who create lasting value for people, communities, and the planet.

Our Mission

  • Integrates purpose-driven thinking across teaching, research, and institutional life.
  • Promotes interdisciplinary collaborations to address pressing societal and environmental challenges.
  • Fosters meaningful engagement with communities, industry, government, and civil society.
  • Encourages innovation, entrepreneurship, and responsible action aligned with Grand Challenges and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Creates opportunities for lifelong learning that enable individuals to lead lives of meaning, resilience, and positive impact.

Our Philosophy

Our core philosophy is based on the principle that the journey towards purpose begins with self-awareness. This is followed by understanding the world we belong to. For that, we believe that purposeful leadership requires empathy and responsibility toward society. Both finally culminate in understanding the work we choose to do. Hence, meaningful careers emerge only when personal strengths align with professional purpose.

Message from the Leadership

Our leadership brings decades of academic and industry expertise.

I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Nihar Amoncar, Dr Avijit Chakravarti and Ms Pallavi Negi along with their team for conceptualizing and bringing together the Centre for Purpose as a centre for community engagement, social impact and sustainability at IILM University, Greater Noida.

The Centre for Purpose is closely aligned with IILM University's vision of creating meaningful learning experiences that help students discover their potential while understanding their role in society.

I wish the Centre every success as it continues to grow and contribute to the vision and values of IILM University, Greater Noida.

At the heart of every meaningful human endeavour lies a fundamental question: why do we exist? Education must go beyond the transfer of knowledge or the pursuit of professional success, it must help individuals discover meaning, responsibility, and direction in their lives.

Leadership today requires more than competence, it requires empathy, inclusivity, and a deep sense of purpose. Through social immersions, interdisciplinary engagement, and community partnerships, the Centre exposes students to the lived realities of society, helping them develop knowledge alongside compassion and responsibility.

The Centre's engagement with global initiatives such as PRME and the UN Global Compact reflects its commitment to nurturing responsible leaders who think beyond themselves.

What We Do

Design Thinking and Social Immersion

The Design Thinking for Social Immersion is a two-credit course that enables students to translate insight into action. Using human-centred design, students identify real societal challenges, engage with communities, and develop creative interventions. The projects done by students were on areas ranging from

The Design Thinking for Social Immersion course enables students to translate their insights into meaningful solutions. Using the principles of human-centred design, students identify real societal challenges, engage with communities, and develop creative interventions that address everyday problems. From community hygiene, gender issues, digital addiction, animal welfare, women's safety and mental well-being to environmental sustainability these projects reflect the belief that purposeful leadership begins with empathy and action.

Social Immersion

True understanding begins when learning moves from the classroom into the community. Students step beyond the classroom to engage directly with underserved communities, experiencing firsthand the complexities of social inequality and grassroots challenges.

Some Student Reflections

"When we reached the NGO, we initially felt unsure about the environment. But the warmth with which the children welcomed us made us realise how quickly assumptions can change."

"Our field visits were a reality check. Seeing the struggles of marginalized communities firsthand was heartbreaking."

"One moment that will stay with us forever was when a young girl wrote her name for the first time and said, 'I didn't know I could do this.'"

Deep Purpose Retreat

What kind of life do we want to lead and what kind of impact do we want to create?

Set in the natural surroundings of the Himalayas the first Deep Purpose Retreat at the Centre for Purpose happened in the month of January. It encouraged students to slow down, observe, reflect, and engage with questions of identity, values, and responsibility.

As part of the program, students slowed down, observed their surroundings, and began reflecting on their own journeys. Guided conversations identified what drives students and how it can contribute to meaningful work. They further explored scarcity and abundance mindsets to challenge limiting assumptions. At the end they developed purpose manifestos connecting values, passions and aspirations to impact. A visit to Sainji Village also gave students a chance to interact with local communities, deepening understanding of sustainability, livelihoods, and interdependence with the natural environment.

01
Research & Collaboration

Engagement with communities is only the beginning, these insights have also inspired deeper academic inquiry, connecting practice with knowledge creation through international research collaborations including:

02
Leeds University (UK)

A research collaboration studying Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices and sustainability transitions among small and medium enterprises. Being done in collaboration with Leeds University (UK), the work involves a pilot study in the textile industry, examining how SMEs respond to sustainability pressures, before expanding to other sectors.

03
PRME International Conference

Beginning 2025, the PRME (Principles of Responsible Management Education) Conference became an integral part of the Centre for Purpose, connecting education, community engagement, research, and global dialogue.
